Tron Legacy Trailer Clip Sound Re-Design

Just shy of a minute, this cut down trailer was produced to experiment with using synthesizers for sound design purposes.

What I Did

After opening up a fresh Pro Tools session and setting up my banks for sound effects, I got cracking at the different ways I could use a synth to make the sounds for the light cycles. The general mentality for this project was to use traditional sound design to build up the sound of the light cycles, buss all of that sound into a buss with a vocoder on it, and then combine that with a synth carrier to create a unique identity for each of the light cycles.

Using this methodology, I found that designing the light cycles was a relatively simple process that was repeatable across the two bikes.

The rest of the scene was rather simple to put together. Tire screetches, metal poles getting hit, and many whooshes make up the clip. In great irony, one of the most difficult and time-consuming aspects of the sound redesign was the lightning in the background. There is a large amount of it, and it happens rapidly, leading to a mushy smear in the low end that needed to be dealt with. It was a fun challenge to take on

Overall, I enjoyed the end result. I think it does some aspects of the light cycles more justice than the official movie, but that is just my personal take.
